Antonio Canova (1757-1822) Considered by art historians to be the master sculptor of the Neoclassical era (1750 to 1850), Antonio Canova learned the art of sculpting as a child. In his 20s, he apprenticed in several studios in Venice; and moved to Rome in 1780, establishing a studio there.

Each commissioned piece brought more acclaim, and his works were in high demand throughout Europe.
Canova was selected to sculpt a monument to George Washington. It is his only statue of an American dignitary.
This slide presentation provides an overview of Antonio Canova’s life and some of his works, with a focus on his George Washington statue; a copy prominently displayed in the rotunda of the North Carolina State Capitol Building in Raleigh.
